This house embraces the context of its established south Austin neighborhood in form and material while also adopting sustainable design strategies and incorporating a open, modern plan. Taking advantage of shading from trees on adjacent lots, the house wraps around an east-facing courtyard that provides afternoon shade in the summer and is shielded from prevailing northern winds in the winter. A three-sided screened porch comprises the southern end of the u-shaped building, which is broken up in mass and scale to create an easy rhythm of shapes that animates the outdoor spaces. The traditional gable forms, a full- length front porch, horizontal siding, and metal roof reflect the character of the surrounding houses. Inside, an open plan kitchen, living and dining spaces share the ground floor with two bedrooms and a bath. A master suite is tucked upstairs under the roof, efficiently adding space without adding a second story that would overwhelming the neighborhood context.
