MONROE REMODEL

This remodel of a South Austin bungalow re-envisions its boxy interiors to accommodate the open, multifunctional spaces needed for a family of four. A central walnut “cube” divides the long main space and provides a different functionality on each side, from piano “nook” to laundry alcove, and storage. A custom-made steel island provides kitchen seating and a box window that runs the length of the kitchen counter’s western wall provides a view to the street while maintaining partial privacy and controlling the harsh sunlight. A small yard is shielded from the western exposure and the busy street by bright blue screen that echoes similar screens at the front entry.
